Why We Don't Ask for Help for Our Mental Health
When you get a flu, you go to a physician. Why not go to a mental health professional when you experience emotional distress?

Despite mental health disorders being extremely common in India, only a fraction of people who need help actually seek it. Research shows that as few as 5 in 100 individuals with mood disorders, anxiety, or substance use issues ever consult a professional, and the reasons go deeper than access or cost. Stigma leads families to treat therapy as something to hide, negative labels like 'mental' or 'crazy' get thrown around casually, and genuine distress is often dismissed as a 'passing phase.' Growing up in this environment, many of us absorb the message that struggling is a personal failure, not a health concern.

The most commonly reported barriers to seeking help are fear of what people will think, doubts about whether therapy actually works, and a strong belief in self reliance: 'I'm strong enough to handle this alone.' Situational barriers like affordability and accessibility compound this. The good news is that these are learned attitudes, which means they can be unlearned. Recognising which barrier is holding you back is often the first step toward taking the next one. Mental health concerns are treatable, and reaching out to a professional is a sign of clarity, not weakness.

Struggling with something similar? Our RCI-registered psychologists offer therapy in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and online across India.
